What To Look For In A Firearms Trainer

I wrote this piece for Ricochet.com over a year ago, long before I decided to become a trainer myself. The only thing I’d add to it now, more than a year later, is to train with someone whose knowledge is up to date. If your firearms trainer talks about the “knockdown power of the .45” or how wasp spray is just as good as pepper spray or advocates for flat out wrong ideas like empty-chamber concealed carry, learn from your mistakes, and don’t train with them again.

I’ve had hundreds and hundreds of hours of formal range and classroom training time, and quite frankly, not all of it has been good.

All of it, however, has been a learning experience.
